The Federal Government will today announce its decision on the proposed heritage listing of large parts of the Kimberley.
The Environment Minister Tony Burke is travelling to a remote spot north of Broome to announce whether the Government plans to add nearly 20 million hectares of WA's far north to the national heritage register.
The Heritage Council has recommended the area be recognised for its Indigenous and colonial history, natural beauty, and to preserve ancient dinosaur and human footprints.
It is a contentious issue for locals.
The listing is supported by Indigenous and conservation groups but pastoralists and miners are concerned it may limit their land use.
The Kimberley, although under-explored, has a diverse range of mineral deposits valued at around $360 billion.
The Chamber of Minerals and Energy has opposed a blanket listing of the Kimberley, fearing it would add another layer of bureaucracy for potential investors and possibly prohibit some projects from going ahead.
The Broome Shire president Graeme Campbell is among those with reservations.
"I'm concerned it may be another layer of bureaucracy and ticking the box," he said.
Mr Campbell is also concerned about what it will mean for the planned controversial gas hub, north of Broome at James Price Point.
Protesters have mounted a number of blockades to the site for weeks.
"The Minister's said the listing doesn't necessarily inhibit development, so what's he coming on with that?" he asked.
"Is he foreshadowing that he'll give national heritage in that area, and then approve the gas project later on, I'm not sure."

The listing does not change land ownership or native title over the area and existing activities on the land and sea are allowed to continue.
But, it does provide protection of the Kimberley's wildlife, coastline and Indigenous heritage and it means that anyone planning to carry out any kind of work that might impact on those values must first get approval from the Federal Government.
There are currently 89 places in the national heritage list including Uluru, the Great Barrier Reef, the Sydney Opera House and Fremantle Prison.
